Jaakkoo-Taara commits to the Science Based Targets initiative

Jaakkoo-Taara has set a climate target for its operations, approved by Science Based Targets (SBTi). This commitment marks the next step in our long-term sustainability work, which we have developed together with our customers and supply chain partners.

Concrete emission reduction targets

In the printing and packaging industry, sustainability requirements are increasing rapidly. Regulations are tightening, and especially our major customers in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and food industries expect concrete and verifiable climate data from their suppliers. SBTi offers a clear framework that allows us to set goals and report on our progress in a credible and comparable way.

The Science Based Targets initiative has officially approved Jaakkoo-Taara’s emission reduction targets. We are committed to maintaining our Scope 1 emissions at their current level until 2029 and to reducing our Scope 2 emissions by 100% during the same period compared to the 2023 baseline. In addition, we are committed to measuring and reducing our Scope 3 emissions, which arise particularly from raw materials and logistics.

– The SBTi-approved targets not only provide us with a clear direction for our climate work but also strengthen our credibility. Concrete and verifiable emission reductions are increasingly a prerequisite for continuing customer relationships, and our commitment brings us a competitive advantage, says Thomas Brusila, CEO of Jaakkoo-Taara.

Challenges in data collection

A major focus of climate work lies in the supply chain, where most emissions are generated. Calculating Scope 3 emissions has proven to be the most challenging stage, as collecting data from different actors takes time. Larger suppliers manage their part thoroughly, but since the calculation process proceeds step by step, the completion of our own calculationscan be delayed. Our customers expect emission data from us, and the quality of that data depends on information from the upstream parts of the chain.

– We collect and analyze data on electricity and heat consumption, energy use in production processes, raw materials, logistics, and waste management, Brusila explains.

The calculations are based on the ClimateCalc tool, with results verified by an external party before they can be used, for example, in product-level calculations.

Changes in everyday operations and production

Jaakkoo-Taara has been working toward climate goals since 2020, so the SBTi commitment is a natural continuation. On a practical level, this work is reflected in improving energy efficiency, increasing material efficiency, and making more climate-friendly procurement and transport choices. Brusila highlights that cooperation becomes even more important within the supply chain, as the targets cannot be achieved without the commitment of suppliers and subcontractors.

Our personnel are an essential part of the process. We engage employees in these goals through training, communication, and concrete actions in daily work. This includes practices related to energy saving, waste sorting, and efficient use of materials, allowing everyone to be part of the solution.

Towards a shared goal

Combating climate change is a global challenge that no single company can solve alone.

– At Jaakkoo-Taara, we want to do our part and ensure that our emission reductions are based on scientific knowledge, Brusila emphasizes.

The Science Based Targets commitment ensures that our efforts support the international goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
