Sustainability is part of our day-to-day business
Sustainability is not just a one-off project for us – it is a core aspect of our day-to-day business. We operate in an environmentally sustainable manner throughout the entire production chain and develop our operations over the long term in collaboration with our customers and partners.

Environmentally sustainable production
Our ISO 14001-certified environmental management system supports continuous improvement and helps us reduce the environmental impact of production, material selection, and energy consumption. This enables us to provide our customers with solutions that combine high quality and sustainable operations.
EcoVadis assessment supporting development work
We have participated in the EcoVadis sustainability assessment for six years. The assessment covers four key areas: environment and climate; employees and human rights; ethical practices; and sustainable procurement.
The results of the most recent assessment show that we have maintained a good standard in every area. Although our overall rating changed to bronze due to stricter assessment criteria, we are actively using the proposed improvements to develop our operations and sustainability management system.
Significant emission reductions
In 2020, we set the goal of reducing our Scope 2 emissions by 60% by 2025 compared to 2019 levels. We achieved this goal ahead of schedule and went far beyond it: our Scope 2 emissions decreased by 99.5% when we switched to emission-free electricity and district heating.
Science-based future targets
This result lays a solid foundation for our next emission reduction goals. We are committed to the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), which guides our climate work toward science-based goals.
The benchmark year is 2023, and our goal is to keep our Scope 1 emissions at the same level, reduce our Scope 2 emissions by 100%, and systematically reduce our Scope 3 emissions across the entire supply chain.
Responsible action for a sustainable future
Jaakkoo-Taara Oy is committed to continuously reducing the environmental impacts of all its activities. Environmental responsibility is an integral aspect of our corporate responsibility, and we require the same principles from our partners.
Our operations are based on the ISO 14001:2015 environmental management system. We identify environmental risks, set clear targets and metrics, and evaluate the system’s performance through regular audits.
Our priority areas are:
- Compliance with legislation: We are open to cooperation with authorities, customers, and stakeholders. pliance with legislation: We are open to cooperation with authorities, customers, and stakeholders.
- Environmental efficiency: We reduce emissions, switch to renewable energy, improve energy efficiency, and monitor water consumption.
- Material efficiency: We reduce emissions and waste, and recycle efficiently.
- Requirements for partners: We require ISO 14001 certification or equivalent activity from our key suppliers.
- Personnel inclusion: We provide regular training and communications on environmental issues.
We act on the principle of continuous improvement and consider environmental factors in our decision-making – taking responsible action for a sustainable future.

Commitment to the UN Global Compact
Jaakkoo-Taara Oy was accepted as a member of the UN Global Compact on 15 August 2025. Joining the Compact is the natural continuation of our work to promote responsible and sustainable packaging manufacturing. In particular, it supports our goals of improving material efficiency, reducing logistics emissions, and developing measures to reduce Scope 3 emissions.
The Global Compact is the world’s largest corporate responsibility initiative. It is based on ten principles connected to human rights, labour, the environment, and combating corruption.
We are committed to following these principles and continuously developing together with our stakeholders.
Our responsibility themes were identified in collaboration with our customers and personnel.
We have also utilised existing certificates and systems (ISO 14001, ISO 45001, FSC and PEFC), but, above all, we have listened to our stakeholders – their expectations and views have guided our work.
These themes have helped us align our operations with the principles of the Global Compact and define their connection to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Occupational safety and well-being
We develop occupational safety and well-being in accordance with ISO 45001.
We aim to prevent accidents, actively monitor the results of occupational well-being surveys, and strengthen equality in everyday life.

Energy and climate
In 2023, we installed 800 solar panels on the roof of our factory. We use energy-efficient machines and Lean development projects in production.
We aim to switch entirely to renewable energy by 2029 and continue to optimise our processes while respecting the environment.

Circular economy and material efficiency
We monitor and reduce material waste, and recycle it into new materials wherever possible, or, at a minimum, utilise it as heat energy.
We are constantly developing solutions that support the circular economy and reduce our environmental impact.

Emission reductions and climate targets
We use the ClimateCalc tool to measure and report the energy efficiency of our production operations (certified 2024).
We have a science-based emission-reduction target approved by the SBTi, and our work to reduce CO2 emissions continues systematically throughout our operations.

Responsible procurement and biodiversity
We use PEFC- and FSC-certified cardboard, and we incorporate biodiversity criteria into our supplier requirements.
Our goal for the future is to ensure that all our raw materials are sustainable and traceable, and that biodiversity is taken into account in all procurement.

Joining the UN Global Compact was a significant step forward for us.
It provides an international reference framework that enables us to develop our operations in a transparent, measurable, and impactful way in collaboration with our customers, personnel, and partners.

Occupational safety and well-being as part of everyday activities
Occupational safety and well-being are an integral part of our everyday activities. We invest over the long term to ensure a safe working environment, and we develop our activities in cooperation with our personnel.
ISO 45001 – a systematic way to ensure safety
In the spring of 2025, we received ISO 45001 certification, which comprehensively covers our occupational health and safety management systems. The system emphasises the unwavering commitment of senior management, the regular assessment of risks and opportunities, and the active involvement of personnel.
Safety is reflected in everyday actions
At the practical level, occupational safety is reflected in activities such as safety rounds, regular safety themes, and active brainstorming by personnel. We use a digital safety channel that makes it easy and convenient to submit safety observations and suggest improvements.
Aiming for zero accidents
Our goal is zero occupational accidents and even better occupational well-being. For us, safety is about more than just instructions and systems – it is a shared culture that everyone can influence through their own actions.
Personnel at the heart of the business
Personnel inclusion is a fundamental aspect of our occupational safety culture. The safety channel enables employees to submit safety observations, give feedback, and suggest improvements. The system also supports the management of corrective measures and, if necessary, cooperation with external experts.
Shared responsibility for safety
We also encourage visitors and suppliers to submit safety observations at a low threshold. Together, we can create a stronger work environment characterised by safety, well-being, and responsibility.
