Automation and information technology student Samuel Sola worked at Jaakkoo-Taara alongside his studies, developing the company’s safety and digital tools.
– I worked together with the Toyme service and focused particularly on the chemical register. In practice, we transferred all chemical data from the old system to the new one: safety data sheets, storage locations, and physical locations, and we filled in the missing information. It was a big project, Sola says.
The Toyme service brings together several systems that Jaakkoo-Taara previously used separately.
– The application makes everyday work much easier for employees, since they no longer have to log in to so many different systems. Now everything is centralized in one place, Sola explains.
During the summer, Sola was also responsible for the purchases needed for the 6S project.
– 6S comes from sort, set in order, shine, standardize, sustain, and safety. In practice, it’s about keeping the work environment clean, processes smooth, and operations safe. For example, we painted the steps of work machines to minimize the risk of accidents, Sola says.
The projects have given Sola the chance to apply his skills in real-life situations.
– I’ve been able to make use of my automation and IT studies, especially in developing the application. Even though I wasn’t the one coding, I was heavily involved in the design and implementation, he says.
One of the highlights of the summer was also writing the script for an internal video together with his colleague Henna Louhi.
– We made a humorous short comedy piece about how to transition from the old applications to the new ones. It was informative but also added a bit of lightness to the change, Sola says.
The Jaakkoo-Taara work community made an impression on Sola as well.
– My coworkers were great, and the atmosphere was open. There wasn’t anything you couldn’t ask or suggest. I didn’t have a single negative experience, Sola praises.
Although the summer job period has ended, Sola sees the possibility of continuing with the project in the future.
– I hope to continue working on this project or another one at Jaakkoo-Taara in the future. I know so much about the chemical register in particular that it would be nice to make use of that knowledge in the future, Sola concludes.
